San Francisco – Flights & Accommodation

Our San Francisco trip was a long time coming, having booked the flights and accommodation back in August 2017 it really felt like it was never going to come around. But it did…and it was awesome! I’ll start at the very beginning, for we all know it’s a very good place to start!

As always I ran the usual searches (check out my resources page for more info) and at the time of booking all those months ago Aer Lingus was the best option, not only for price but also timings.

It was my first time flying with them and it was fine, one downside would be the stopover in Dublin however because I went via Ireland it meant I got to go through US Pre Clearance and not have to wait in the immigration lines at SFO Airport. Arriving as if I was on an internal flight saved me a lot of time and I was on board the pre booked SuperShuttle to the hotel rather quickly.

For those, like me, who usually have a wine aboard a flight to help get to sleep a little quicker, alcoholic drinks are not included in your airfare (soft drinks are) but can be purchased on board. The meals were fine; standard economy long haul food and pretty frequent, including one course of ice cream which was a nice treat. The seats were standard and leg room sufficient (I’m 5’7″) and each seat had its own entertainment system with some pretty recent films on so three movies each leg and I was sorted!

Hotel Carlton was the best option for us; it’s well located in Lower Nob Hill, and satisfactorily priced considering San Francisco is a major US city and we stayed during the Easter holidays. We opted for a Superior King and were located on the 8th floor (thank goodness for elevators) which featured a king sized bed, a walk in closet and bathroom complete with a tub. A fairly basic hotel but with everything you need and within walking distance to lots of places I can’t complain. One thing to note though is that the walls are pretty thin and you can hear your neighbours fairly easily!

The staff were lovely and the hotels hosts a complimentary wine reception accompanied by live music in the lobby for guests every evening, a nice touch I thought.

There is an onsite restaurant called Phlox Commons where we had breakfast a couple of mornings, and a snack one night, which had a great menu and a good selection of beverages.
