5 Must-Visit Destinations in Southeast Asia

The world is so big and full of different places to visit that it’s hard to know where to head to next. I always find that every place I visit opens up a whole new world of places I want to add to my bucket list! I feel as though Southeast Asia has so much to offer, with such diverse countries that it would need a whole bucket list of its own. It’s one of the most popular places with gap year backpackers and adventurers, and it’s easy to see why. What’s not easy, however, is choosing where exactly to go when there is so much choice! Here are 5 must-visit destinations in Southeast Asia.

Bangkok, Thailand

Of course, it is on my bucket list to visit the beach from The Beach, but there are so many other things I’d love to see and do in Thailand. I chose Bangkok because, although it’s very tourist-heavy and popular, there are reasons for that — it’s because it is really amazing! You have to take a trip on a tuk-tuk, and try some of the incredible street food, explore the temples and museums, and just generally soak up the culture and atmosphere.

If you are looking for a place to party, then Laos is not the place for you. However, if you are an adventurer, or want to indulge in Buddhist calm, then you should book a trip to Laos immediately!

A stunning place to explore, featuring mountains and jungles, try out caving, kayaking or zip-lining, and then take some downtime to check out some of the Buddhist temples.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The capital of Malaysia is a bustling city with plenty to do — if you ever get over admiring the architecture of the innovative skyscrapers, including the world’s tallest twin towers – Petronas Twin Towers.

Another record this city holds is for the world’s largest walk-in aviary which is certainly worth a visit. Make sure you visit the Batu Caves, which is a stunning Hindu temple set in limestone caves, and check out shopping in Bukit Bintang.

Bali, Indonesia

There are over 17,000 islands in Indonesia and Bali is the most popular! In fact, since 2006 the number of Australians alone going to Bali has shot up by 546%. It’s definitely becoming somewhere more and more popular every year.

If you are looking for some stunning temples, Bali is the perfect place to visit as there are just so many options! The Monkey Forest in Ubud is also worth a visit, as is the Ubud Art Market where you can pick up some stunning handcrafted goods. The perfect mix of natural beauty spots, historical sites, temples and culture, Bali is a favourite with tourists and it’s so easy to see why!

There is so much to do in Singapore that it’s hard to narrow it down! Visit Marina Bay for a Vegas-style experience; shopping and visiting the casinos while watching the light show, or head to Universal Studios for some fun on the roller coasters. Gardens By the Bay is an incredible feat of architecture, art and horticulture, or relax at Sentosa — a purpose-built island where R & R is the key!

As you can see, there is so much to see, do and experience in Southeast Asia, it’s no wonder that it has a place on most people’s’ bucket lists. Whatever it is that you enjoy, you are bound to find somewhere in Southeast Asia where you can indulge in it — history, food, culture, or adventure.

So, now all that’s left is to book a trip and decide where you are going to visit first! Let me know in the comments if you’ve been to any of these destinations, and what you thought. Or if there is anywhere else I should add to this list.
