Our trip to the coastal resort city of Nha Trang, whilst heading south through Vietnam, was mostly for a couple of down days to break up the city sightseeing routine. We spent these two days either on the beach or snorkelling, and it was the later that I wanted to tell you about mostly.
From Hoi An it was another train ride to get to Nha Trang, and another overnight one at that. This time around we were in a 1st Class Sleeper (soft beds with 4-berths per cabin) booked as usual via 12 Go Asia.
For our three night stay we booked the Xavia Hotel just a short five minute walk from the beach, and about a 20 minute stroll to the centre of town where many bars, restaurants and shops are located.
You might have guessed it already but our main activity was snorkelling in Nha Trang, which we booked via Viator. The half day trip included hotel pick up, two snorkel sites around Hòn Mun Island, a brunch meal of banh mi, and drop off at our hotel. As with all of these kinds of trips the hotel pick up offer is often subject to it’s location however despite our hotel being out of the main town Xavia still was an approved pick up hotel.
Our boat was pretty full with a variety of nationalities so there were introductions in both English and Russian (there are a huge amount of Russian tourists in Nha Trang due to the twice-daily direct flights) which started off our day. We were then put into different groups dependant on whether we were snorkelling, diving, or just sightseeing from the boat (yes that is an option, but if you are after this it’s worth ringing the office for a price) and then given our equipment. Once at the first site we plunged into the water (pretty warm, it is Asia after all) and went about trying to find Nemo. After about an hour and back on board it was time for brunch followed by moving sites and jumping back in the water for more exploration. We were lucky enough to see an abundance of fish including nemo and his dad!
For the price it is a great excursion and the hotel pick up/drop off is an extra bonus and makes the half day really simple, however unless one is into water-sports or beach time I probably wouldn’t recommend Nha Trang as a place to visit, there isn’t a whole bunch of things to do and in my opinion it can be missed off a Vietnam itinerary.
